Join us for a story time reading & launch celebration of Téo Tutu (pub. 11/2), a heartwarming picture book about gender-creativity and being yourself, with author Maryann Jacob Macias in collaboration with Dance Project of Washington Heights. Téo Tutu, illustrated by Alea Marley, is a joyful look at one boy’s love of dance and how it allows him to express himself in a way that makes him comfortable and happy. Téo loves to dance, whether it's the cumbia with Papí, the bhangra with Amma, or ballet class with Miss Lila. He also loves the way his tutu makes him feel, inside and out. But when it comes time to decide which outfit to wear in the big dance recital--a sparkly tutu or shimmering silver pants–Téo wonders if being his most authentic self on stage will put him too much in the spotlight.
Not only is Teo’s story inspiring, but it is filled with adult allies that encourage and support his decision. The safe and creative environment that is fostered within Teo’s world are ones that parents are trying to create as well. Teo’s Tutu is not only an enjoyable read, but it’s also a way in which adults and caregivers can approach gender creativity with young readers in a way that prioritizes their safety and wellbeing.
Maryann Jacob Macias is a graduate of the City College of New York, CUNY and the Solstice MFA Low-Residency Program at Pine Manor College. This is her first picture book.
