While 2009 might not be long enough ago to merit a wholesale re-evaluation on “aesthetic merit” or whatever the fuck, the past decade has certainly seen a breaking up (to an extent) of the old guard gatekeepers that deemed this movie busted. Here’s a blurb picked at random that basically sums up the critical reception to this movie: “The film doesn't have a large enough body count for a slasher, not enough high school angst for a teen dramedy, and not enough debauchery for exploitation.” Well, my brother in Christ, that’s because it’s NOT THOSE THINGS.
People malign what they don’t understand, and when the loudest voices are (still, unfortunately, often) straight white men, too much that is queer and camp and deadly creative or new is buried beneath a reply-guy avalanche. We’re here to bury them in turn and revel in Diablo Cody’s iambic-pentameter-of-angst dialogue, a pitch perfect late aughts musical moment, and the honestly gd sizzling chemistry of Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried.
In the immortal words of Jennifer: “I’m not killing people, I’m killing boys” 😈
