Cartoon Carnival #102: Wonderful Women
It's time for another big batch of 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1920s through the 1950s, straight from the Tommy José Stathes Archives—on the City Reliquary's backyard silver screen!
For our 102nd Cartoon Carnival program, we're shining the spotlight on a special group of Golden Age characters, all of whom belonged to a considerable minority: women with top billing! This is in collaboration with The City Reliquary’s newest exhibit, Wonder Women: NYC’s Heroes of Heterodoxy, which highlights the fascinating history of women’s tireless fight to break the chains of orthodoxy in NYC.
Starting with a sampling of some of the early Alice Comedies featuring a live-action little girl in a cartoon world, we'll move along to the 'big three' headliners in this category of classic cartoon shorts: Betty Boop, Little Lulu, and Little Audrey. This barrier-breaking trio of headlining ladies will be joined by some of their cartoon colleagues of the period, such as Olive Oyl.
Be sure to bring all your family and friends out to see these classic and now-rare cartoons the way they were meant to be seen—projected on 'reel' film, and enjoyed with a physical audience.
We'll also have a small tag sale of cartoony items in order to raise some extra funds for film archiving costs. You'll find all sorts of fun and vintage goodies available for your own collections, or to give as gifts! And, as part of our opening Half-Happy Hour, the Reliquary will have bar refreshments available. You may bring your own food to this event, but please support the venue for all drinks consumed on the premises. Bar is *cash only.*
This show WILL sell out

WHAT IS THE CITY RELIQUARY?
Reliquaries typically house the ostensible bones of dead saints. We house the bones of New York City. Seltzer bottles to schist cores, roller skates from racially integrated rinks, and a burnt out lightbulb from the Statue of Liberty's torch are just a few examples of our exciting collection.
We use this space to breathe new life into New York city, with not only our incredible collection of interactive historical exhibits, but continuous and stimulating programming, arts, and events.
WHY MEMBERSHIP?
Membership gives you FREE ACCESS to all upcoming events, museum entry with a plus one on all open days, and the unique opportunity to be a part of a thriving creative community. You can become a member for $10/month at
cityreliquary.org/join.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
The City Reliquary values the individual diversity of every member of our community. Differences in age, race, ethnic heritage, religion, appearance, gender, sexual orientation, or any number of characteristics provide experiences, viewpoints, and ideas that strengthen and enrich our mission.
We are committed to creating an environment that is safe, inclusive, respectful, and equitable, and to include and uplift people with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to create a safe and inspiring space.
From day one, our motto has been this simple phrase: Be Civic. And we’re sticking to it.
