Talk about a double feature! Elvira: Mistress of the Dark strutted into theaters 34 years ago . . . but way fewer theaters than it should have! Its distributor, New World, kicked the bucket the week of its release, a fate worse than death for an already troubled production. The film’s poor performance earned Cassandra Peterson a Razzie nom for worst actress, and just like that, Elvira’s “big scream debut” went up in smoke.
The funny thing is: it didn’t matter. Because it was too smart, too funny, and too big to fail. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark is a great hang with memorable gags and effects, a dreamy hunk, and more one-liners than there are bats in the sky. It is a goddamn joy to watch Cassandra Peterson quip and blunder her way through small-town Massachusetts, skewering all the square stiffs. If you’ve ever wondered how Elvira ascended from local TV phenom to all-time queer icon, this camp classic will tell all!
Unpleasant dreams . . .
