Somehow underrated in the year 2022 - whether because of backlash, watered-down IP, or a lengthy parade of imitators - The Blair Witch Project marked the beginning of art in the 21st century. Not only revolutionizing the horror genre by taking found footage to its extreme, The Blair Witch Project also invented modern movie marketing when its reality-blurring web 1.0 site went “viral” in the year before the film’s release.
Made for $60k, the film budget equivalent of a bundle of twigs and teeth, The Blair Witch Project uses the actors' real names and shoots with the same equipment the characters use. A masterclass in mood and forced perspective, it famously shows less than any other supernatural horror film. By removing everything horrific that we associate with horror, the film incredibly recreates the breathless, angry panic of pure lostness. It is an inspiring reminder of the power and possibility of DIY art.
