Exploring sonic signifiers of wartime and violence, percussionist Ryan Nestor performs multimedia works linking sound, imagery, and historical context. UCSC Musicology alum and Director of San Diego New Music Charissa Noble leads the audience in a post-concert discussion.
Ryan Nestor is a percussionist specializing in contemporary music. As a performer, Nestor has commissioned and premiered numerous solo and chamber works. He is a former member of the percussion ensemble Red Fish Blue Fish and has performed alongside groups such as the International Contemporary Ensemble and The Bang on a Can All-Stars. Nestor earned the DMA degree from the University of California, San Diego, the MM from Stony Brook University, and the BMME from the University of Kentucky.
Flutist Meerenai Shim promotes contemporary work through myriad channels, including as a solo performer, her chamber ensembles, her record label, and her own discography of three albums. Shim has performance credits across the United States, including within the Soundwave Biennial in San Francisco, the Bang on a Can Summer Festival, the National Flute Association’s annual Conventions, and numerous universities. Shim holds degrees from San Francisco State University (M.M.) and DePaul University (B.M.).
