Girl 6 is a radical film about pleasure brought to you by Pulitzer winner Suzan-Lori Parks, Spike Lee and a shocking amount of famous actors. This second-ever Fox Searchlight film (and first-ever Spike film not written by Spike) has been criminally underappreciated by critics since day one. But as with all great Spike films there are joyful moments of levity, essential passages of cultural conflict and beautiful formal and stylistic revelations.
If you’ve never seen this movie before, it’s probably because it’s got a Prince soundtrack that’s pretty impossible to license for streaming. And as far as we’ve come as a society (not far), we still struggle to evaluate works of art concerning sex work. The depiction of sex work here is imperfect, but way ahead of its time. The film on the whole has a BUNCH to say about loneliness, fulfillment and gratification in the digital age. We’re hereby reclaiming this flick as an essential work of 90s indie cinema and Spike’s oeuvre.
Sliding scale $5-10 tix available for presale, any remaining sold at door (all proceeds go to studio's screening fees and future programming all for you!).
