Manifest Destiny and western expansionism were greedy, hungry acts that led to the gobbling up of land, of animals, of freedoms by those willing to step over as many corpses as they had to in order to reach their own promised land. You have to eat to live, and, in most cases, something has to die so that you can eat. But there are some people that live to eat and to eat gluttonously at that. If all that's standing in the way of that lustful appetite are people's lives, it becomes very easy to see how the empire keeps expanding.

Director Antonia Bird takes that idea to its logical conclusion, tying together capitalism, Manifest Destiny, greedy settlers, and the Wendigo myth into an offbeat period piece horror movie unlike anything you've seen before. How best to whet your appetite? As an aperitif, the film has an Americana Banjo-heavy score by Michael Nyman (The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover) and Damon Albarn (Gorillaz), Guy Pierce in the coziest sweater you'll ever see, and a delightfully unhinged Robert Carlyle. In short, Ravenous is a bloody feast that will leave you hungry for more.
