Spring—traditionally a time of hope and renewal, the return of light and warmth. Yet the cold reality of oppression is still with us. Thankfully the arts, and poetry in particular, help us to process all of this and renew together. Join us for an exciting time as the radical power of spoken word continues to inspire us to arts and action as we continue in the 11th year of the DMV area’s quarterly venue of the theme “Peace, Justice, Poetry!”

Let's come together in a poetry/spoken word open mic of justice, conscious thought, spirituality, fam, real life—whatever advances the village! In the tradition of Emma Goldman’s “Mother Earth” magazine, come drop some progressive 'fiyah' on us, or contribute just with your presence and energy! By the way: it’s a non-erotic poetry, non-“Love Jones” type of evening, so we ask that you not go there. (And, almost needless to say, leave the misogyny, homophobia and other unnecessary ish outside!)

Javon Rustin is bringing the poetic heat! Javon is a poet, performer, and programmer; a writer of stories, stanzas, and software that started competing in poetry slams after graduating from North Carolina A&T in 2013. He ranked 4th in the 2022 National Blackberry Peach Poetry Slam and has worked as a teaching artist for youth in the D.C. and Dallas Public School Districts. He has been published in six anthologies and his performances can be found on Button Poetry, Write About Now, and All Def Poetry. Javon continues to compete with his poetry but always returns to his love of writing and speaking on topics such as mental health, Black joy, and diversity.
