The last Fire Over Heaven of the season is a doozy. Ka Baird, whose visceral, performance art slash slapstick slash postmodern frontwoman-with-no-band personae has become increasingly dialed in and explosive in recent years, has been wowing and puzzling audiences of late with little more than a microphone, some software patches, a jacket and headband. She'll be joined by the most sensitive of partners, cellist Lester St.Louis, whose idiosyncratic approach has found him straddling improv, noise and new music worlds, with collaborators like Chris Williams, Leo Chang, and countless others. He was also integral to the late Jaimie Branch's Fly or Die. Matt Mottel & Tcheser Holmes will also be on the bill. Keyboardist Matt Mottel is probably best known as half of the unclassifiable duo, Talibam! (with Kevin Shea) but he's cut a deep and weird path through the New York avant and jazz undergrounds playing with luminaries, outsiders and free jazz elders seemingly since he was a little kid in Brooklyn. It's kind of unthinkable that he doesn't live in the city anymore but he'll be down from Newburgh to rock out with drummer Tcheser Holmes. When not in the drum chair of the mighty Irreversible Entanglements, Tcheser is a first call drummer for countless jazz and free music projects, from Isiah Collier's Chosen Ones to recent NYC gigs with Marshall Allen to his own DrumsNButta. Come close out the season with us Thursday, May 18th!
