After going to nationals with his (perfect?) directorial debut BRING IT ON, Peyton Reed got a blank-ish check to lead an ultra-stylized homage to 60s sex comedies that people, uh, did not want. Whether it trailed too closely to the played-out Austin Powers or was simply marketed completely incorrectly (it was that one), the film fizzled at the box office, resigned to blowout bins, waiting for an obvious critical reevaluation.
A luminous, Donen-esque romp, DOWN WITH LOVE stars Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor squaring off as NYC’s most eligible singles, hot off the heels of CHICAGO and MOULIN ROUGE. These absolute fucking movie stars are aided in their battle of the sexes by besties David Hyde Pierce (!) and Sarah Paulson (!). The production design sizzles, the costumes crush, the camp is at 11, and the whole thing sings like Judy goddamn Garland.
