Based on the coming-of-age novel SHIMOTSUMA STORY by cult author Novala Takemoto, this tale of the unlikely “friendship” (cough, cough) of a Yanki Girl and Lolita Girl is every bit as eccentric and charming as its source text.
Here’s your meet cute … precocious Momoko is addicted to the precious Tokyo clothing label “Baby, the Stars Shine Bright” and needs cash to doll up. When her bootlegger dad runs out of dough, she finds a buyer online to hawk his knock off Versace collection to: the violent biker ganger Ichiko.
What follows is a chaotic hang out movie that’s one part Tsai Ming-liang, one part anime and a heaping serving of je ne sais quoi (with a killer pop punk soundtrack to boot).
