With practical effects that harken back to THE THING and Hooper-esque levels of grit and gore, HOUSE OF WAX is easily one of the best horrors to come out of the early aughts that no one would take seriously. Director Jaume Collet-Serra pulled talent from massively successful TV shows like 24 and Gilmore Girls and rounded out the cast with the one and only, Paris Hilton. HOUSE OF WAX is Second wave MTV cinema and is very aware of it. Hilton had just finished her reality show The Simple Life so not only was she not a Serious Actor ™️ she was seen as somewhat of a joke at the time. But the joy of this film is she gets to be in on the joke. For middle schoolers and adults alike, the pull of this film was that you could “watch Paris die!” And oh does she die.
The film soars when it comes to its production design and its unbelievable climax, and still manages to be incredibly fun and pulpy with its costumes, characters, and over-the-top kills. The soundtrack in its own right solidifies this film’s spot in Nü Metal horror canon. Join us for this 2005 time capsule and REMEMBER: Wear your sturdiest, ankle covering boots.
