“This place is a tomb.”

In 1997, Paul W. S. Anderson (for better or worse mostly known for the RESIDENT EVIL movies and being married to queen Milla Jovovich) took us to hell in a tin can. Like few $60 million movies before or since, EVENT HORIZON is possessed of a truly down evil sensibility, a bit of queasy, opaque sadism that rarely makes it out the studio gates intact.

And it could have been even more! If not for pearl-clutching test audiences who fainted (!) and complained about the “extreme gore,” this taut 96-minute space-nasty might have clocked in at a Kubrickian 130. Luckily, Anderson’s influences remain intact, and we get everything from THE SHINING’s blood elevators to HELLRAISER’s hooks and SOLARIS’ sentient ship.

Among its many violent delights, what revolves at the core of this movie is its truly hellish production design and the square-up between unlikely tentpole titans Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, smack in between JURASSIC PARK (1993) and THE MATRIX (1999). Rounded out with a who’s who of stellar character actors, we might go so far as to say this crew gives even the Nostromo's a run for its money (straight through a portal to hell 🥵).

Just remember, it’s all in your head.
