October edition of Fire Over Heaven lands on Thursday 10/19 with vocal-centered improv quartet Time Trout and electronics and double bass duo, Jonah Rosenberg & Sean Ali. Time Trout's recent debut record -- Stuck Like Jane Austen -- on OTOROKU (the in-house imprint of storied London venue Cafe OTO) has been described by WIRE magazine as "a masterpiece in spontaneous strangeness." Vocalist Viv Corringham seems to draw as much on cut-up and concrete poetry as she does on extended vocal techniques. Her words tend towards the surreal and with titles like Spinning eggs, Heavy Jelly, Okonomiyaki and Frosted Bats, the err...gastronomic? Her bandmates don't shy away from rubbery, deep pocketed grooves, courtesy of bassist Dave Mandl and drummer Stephen Moss, or skronk via Marcus Cummins' soprano saxophone, which somehow manages to come across as both acerbic and warm. This is all to say that the proceedings are both engagingly out and a good time. Who'd a thunk? ... You may have seen Jonah Rosenberg behind the mixer at previous installments of Fire Over Heaven or at Roulette, but we are thrilled to finally have him on the other side of the desk here, in a very special duo with double bassist Sean Ali. Rosenberg's synth and max patches skitter, pan and glitch, sometimes processing(?) Ali's deft bow work and low end throbs, a ghost in the machine that most certainly pushes back. High functioning human/machine music. We've been meaning to get these guys at the series for a while now and it's hard to imagine a better combination than this bill, so come through!
