We are very pleased to announce that our monthly concert series, Fire Over Heaven, will be guest-curated by Isabel Crespo Pardo, Ian Douglas-Moore and Lesley Mok from January to June of 2024. We couldn't be more excited to have them join the continuum of artist/organizers who have curated the series since its inception in 2015. The first of these concerts will be on January 18th and curated by Isabel Crespo Pardo. In their own words: "As an artist and curator, I am invested in art making as a social practice. I seek to highlight deeply personal work that embodies a searching spirit, and am drawn to artists intent on inspiring reflection. I hope to create intentional gatherings that compel audiences towards openness and curiosity." Please join us as we embark on a season of new perspectives!
Fire Over Heaven begins the year with a strings-heavy double bill of sinonó, featuring Isabel Crespo Pardo (voice, composition), Lester St. Louis (cello), and Henry Fraser (bass), and the Emmanuel Michael Group, composed of E.M. (guitar) and Rafael Enciso (bass).
sinonó performs intimate and improvised poemsongs that, as one audience member put it, embody “the sweetness of grief.” The trio shares an affinity for melody, metaphor and abstraction that draws them into familiar yet surprising environments, crackling with aliveness. Their debut album, la espalda y su punto radiante (the backbody and its radiant point) is set for an early 2024 release on Subtext Records.
Emmanuel Michael exists in an intimate and vast sonic universe, reminiscent of light traveling through water. As an artist, they are intent on building an artistic practice nurtured by empathy and driven by a search for truth and honesty. Their guitar and bass format provides ample space for improvised counterpoint and poignant melodies.
This first installment of FOH is curated by Isabel Crespo Pardo and presents two distinct approaches to reflection, subtlety and song.
