In her inventive blend of fiction, documentary and archival footage, artist-filmmaker Jumana Manna follows a group of foragers who collect the native plants za’atar and ’akkoub in defiance of local laws. Shot between lush green hills and drab courtrooms, Foragers draws a connection between the policing of Palestinian customs and the politics of land control. For Manna, the “simple act of going out and collecting wild weeds” has become an issue of sovereignty in a territory where a way-of-life embodies a form of resistance.
