It’s hard to make a movie. It’s even harder to make a movie that makes an impression. The vast museum of American independent cinema is full of forgotten relics lovingly constructed by daring people who were finding themselves, and sometimes, when the wind is just right and the idea really shines, finding yourself can also find you an audience.

Childhood comrades Macon Blair and Jeremy Saulnier turned out to be two of the anointed few. Following up their cult-classic but not king-making Murder Party, they turned to Kickstarter to get Blue Ruin up and running. And run it does! In some of the best revenge cinema this side of Park Chan-wook, Blair slashes and burns through a twisty tale while observing it all with those haunted peepers. For everyone who nearly lost their lunch at the sight of that carved up arm in Green Room, there’s plenty of queasy spectacle here to keep you on your toes.
