Though not as directly impressionist as 1923’s Cœur fidèle, L'Inondation still manages to bring a few touches of the style to bear on this adaptation of André Corthis’s short story. Louis Delluc’s final film (and likely the cause of his death), stars his wife Ève Francis as Germaine. Germaine arrives in a small town near the Rhône to find her father (Edmond Van Daële) following the death of her mother who had abandoned her father while Germaine was a child. The atmosphere is oppressive and the townspeople small-minded except for the kind farmer Alban, with whom Germaine immediately falls in love. Alban is however engaged to the flighty Margot who is prone to cruel laughter. And then the levees overflow…
