In light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the response of the state, we find it is increasingly important to be conscious of security. In support of protestors and organizers, this workshop will be an overview of basic, intermediate and advanced digital security considerations. Covering: basic street protestor operations security; considerations for folks and orgs doing backend support; threat modeling, security mindset; specific device security strategy; and more.

Ana Valens (Reporter for Daily Dot, Sex worker, Data Privacy Activist, twitter: @acvalens) - A broad overview and intro to security. What is encryption? What are steps you can take to protect yourself? How can you talk to less tech-literate folks about security?

David Huerta (Digital Security Trainer at Freedom of the Press Foundation) - An intermediate-level overview of smartphone security and working with VPNs: VPNs are useful for protecting your online activities from being known by your ISP or cell data provider. Choosing one can introduce a whirlwind of factors to consider, so let’s talk about the top things to look for in their privacy policies and tech specs.

Matt Mitchell (Hacker/Security Researcher, Founder of CryptoHarlem, twitter: @geminiimatt) - More advanced considerations for digital security: Creating pseudonomyous profiles. Assessing threat/models. Securely coordinating between different groups of people forming networks.
